Fortin’s practice involves a deep engagement with materiality, colour and process; she creates with forms and sites surrounding urban environments to understand and portray the interconnections and relationships of being and daily life. Fortin works with textiles from thrift shops and donations, colour from foraged plants and found rusted objects, and processes that involve the index, imprint and trace.
Stephanie completed an interdisciplinary BFA at NSCAD University (Halifax, NS) and is a 2025 MFA candidate at the University of Guelph (Guelph, ON). Fortin has participated as a full-time artist-in-residence with Harbourfront Centre (Toronto, ON), Akin + Museum of Contemporary Art Toronto (MOCA), La Maison des métiers de Québec in Quebec City and Est-Nord-Est, Saint-Jean-Port- Joli, Quebec as part of the 2021 Biennale de Sculpture de Saint-Jean-Port-Joli, and has received grants and awards from Craft Ontario, Ontario Arts Council, Toronto Arts Council, Harbourfront Centre and The Tony Scherman Graduate Scholarship in 2023. Fortin’s studio resides in Guelph, Ontario, on the traditional lands of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, Anishinabewaki Nation, Attiwonderonk, and Haudenosaunee Confederacy.
